Men and women put roughly the same amount of money by in their ISAs - but there are big regional variations across the UK.
New details of cash ISAs have been released by Halifax - offering a tantalising glimpse into the nation's savings habits.
According to the financial firm, the highest typical balance for people saving in the tax-free accounts is found in Epsom and Ewell, at an average of £9,343. The Derbyshire Dales came second and South Buckinghamshire third, both with typical account balances in excess of £9,000 - impressive compared with the overall national average of just under £7,000.
While these three areas are not geographically linked, they are all relatively well off when compared with the rest of the UK. When figures were adjusted through taking average earnings in each area into account, Christchurch in Dorset came out on top - with savers putting aside £8,565 in their ISAs, or 45 percent of gross annual earnings.
Meanwhile, in Wales, ISA holders had the highest balances in comparison with region-wide earnings at 32 percent. Perhaps unsurprisingly with the capital city among the most expensive places to live in the UK, London came out bottom of this measure on just 20 percent.
Martin Ellis, chief economist at Halifax, commented: "The level of savings invested in ISAs varies significantly across the country. Everyone has an annual allowance of £3,600 to place in a cash ISA, which will earn interest free of tax."
Elsewhere in the report, men were found by Halifax to have roughly equal ISA savings to women, with just one percent separating the sexes. Males had a typical balance of £6,980, with females on £6,891.
