Many policys are overly opaque at the moment, Sainsbury's Finance claimed.
Home insurance policies should be made less complex, a major provider has claimed.
Sainsbury's Finance, which offers home insurance cover as part of its financial services, said today that three in four policies which offer a no-claims discount provide "no details" on how these discounts work. This could prove potentially costly - with customers who make a claim facing unusually steep increases in premiums.
No-claims bonuses are also more commonly offered for car cover rather than home cover, increasing the confusion. Sainsbury's found that "almost all" car insurance policies offer the discount, compared with just 76 percent of home insurance deals.
The situation is made still more opaque by the eight percent of home insurers who offer the no-claims bonus, but charge an extra penalty on customers who claim on their policy. This group is penalised their discount period being cut by a year or more.
Neil Laird, home insurance manager for Sainsbury's, said: "A no-claims discount can significantly reduce your premiums… We don't see any reason why insurers should offer no-claims discounts on their motor insurance policies but not on their home insurance, and it is alarming that so many providers are not being upfront and transparent about their no claims provision.
"While a no-claims discount won't necessarily stop premiums going up the next year, it can provide a significant saving and can soften the impact of any unrelated rise in premiums after a claim so it's worthwhile shopping around for a policy that allows you to earn the discount."
