Homeowners Urged to Give Houses 'Winter Health Check'

Homeowners have been urged to check their homes over before the winter sets in.

Householders should make sure their homes are in good shape before the winter really starts, according to Halifax Home Insurance.

The firm said that people should begin winter-proofing their homes now to avoid damage later, with predictions of severe weather this winter. Indeed, much of the country has already experienced snow over the last few days.

Last year Halifax had to deal with nearly 30,000 claims for windstorm damage, which required more than £17 million in repair costs. Burst and frozen pipes were also a huge problem, with more than 20,000 claims costing on average £2,000 each to fix.

"Winter is the time when we retreat to the warmth and safety of our homes, but before doing so there are some essential checks that need to be carried out," said David Rochester from the company. "With home emergencies, prevention is certainly better than the cure, and much of the damage could be avoided if householders spent a small amount of time preparing for the bad weather."

Halifax said that this preparation includes checks both inside and outside the house. Outside, the condition of the roof should be checked while inside the central heating should be set to at least ten degrees to stop pipes from freezing.

Additionally, the firm recommended preparing an emergency kit - containing vitals such as torches and home insurance documents - in case the worst should happen.
