Homeowners are being urged to make sure they have adequate home insurance cover ahead of an expected increase in break-ins.
As the recession gets underway, the UK could suffer from an increase in burglaries, it has been claimed. According to Abbey Home Insurance, cases of burglary tend to rise during times of economic hardship and the months ahead are likely to follow this trend.
The company cites figures from the British Crime Survey which show that during the last recession, between May 1990 and March 1992, there was a spike in the number of domestic burglaries being reported in England and Wales.
It claims that with a recession now imminent, a similar increase is likely to occur. Indeed, home secretary Jacqui Smith recently warned of a possible rise in levels of theft, burglary and robbery as the economy suffers a downturn.
Abbey is therefore urging homeowners to make sure they are fully covered against loss of possessions and damage to their property and is advising them against cutting down on cover as a way of saving money.
Thierry Campet, sales and marketing director at Abbey Insurance, said: "Look for peace of mind with an unlimited sum policy and in the event of being burgled you can feel confident that your total home contents will be covered".
According to the latest British Crime Survey, domestic burglary as recorded by the police fell by four percent in 2007-08 compared to 2006-07.
